Changes for the Grande Prairie Curling Centre

Jul 2, 2018 | 7:00 AM

Changes have been made at the Grande Prairie Curling Centre.

Nicole Shirvell has been hired as General Manager. They have also hired Gavin Young to be the Chef.

Curling Centre President Dan Drake says having these two will make the curling rink more of a year-round facility.

“We have two beautiful rooms upstairs, one big lounge area (and) one smaller meeting room that holds 30-plus people. Chef Gavin will be there, he’ll be doing lunches again. Back in the day, the curling club used to serve lunches. We’re going to go back to that.”

Drake says Shirvell has a background in marketing and event planning.

He adds physical changes to the building itself are mostly done.

“It is a city-owned building now and the City already remodeled the upstairs lounge area a couple years ago, (along with) the meeting room. This past year, they did the downstairs, so the curling rink itself has already been renovated.”

Shirvell has been at her new post for about a month. Young will start at the end of August. Drake adds the plan is to be open for lunches in the early fall.

The ice will be installed in September, with curling season starting in October.
