Volunteers needed for the 18th annual Street Performance Festival

Jul 1, 2018 | 6:00 AM

The 18th annual Street Performers Festival is just under a month away and organizers are still looking for volunteers.

Clyde Blackburn, Co-chair of the Grande Prairie International Performers Festival organizing committee says the Alberta Summer Games are happening at the same time, but he is optimistic.

“We are looking for volunteers and surprisingly, we are at about the same place as we usually are at this time of year in terms of filling our volunteer slots. We are about half full.”

Blackburn adds the Festival bases its volunteer needs on timeslots. There are roughly 170-time slots in total and half of those are currently filled. The Saturday and Sunday slots remain the most available for volunteers.

This year’s Festival will have an altered look after shifting to a new location on 101 Avenue and 101 Street.

“It makes for an entirely different venue, for a couple of reasons. The streetscape is a different look from what we are used to. We are also dealing with the brand-new renovations they have done in that part of downtown. It’s exciting,” said Blackburn.

Blackburn adds even if there are not as many volunteers because of the Alberta Summer Games, as usual, he doesn’t expect there to be too much of a downfall.

The committee is looking for more volunteers especially before and after the event.

“It takes about 10 people for setting up and for taking down to get it set up efficiently,” added Blackburn.

Blackburn adds volunteers are still needed on Friday before the event and on Sunday after the event is completed.

The festival takes place at the Farmers Market from July 20 to 22.
