Extreme cold warning, fog, and bus cancellations

Feb 4, 2019 | 4:41 AM

An Extreme Cold Warning remains in place for Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge, Valleyview and surrounding areas.

With the wind chill it will feel like between -40 and -50 Monday morning.  The extreme wind chill will moderate throughout the day but then dip again overnight and into Tuesday.

Grande Prairie has hit -40 for the first time since last February (without wind chill.)

Monday morning temperatures hit a record low in the city. The old record low for February 4 was -39.4 in 1975, and we passed that today with a bitterly cold -42.

The cold arctic air is expected to stick around through most of the week for northern Alberta.

Frostbite can develop in a matter of minutes and if it’s too cold for you to be outside, it is also too cold for your pets.

There is also thick fog in place, blanketing the Peace Region, making for very poor visibility.  The ice fog patches are expected to dissipate this morning.

With the extreme cold, a number of school buses are cancelled:

All Grande Prairie Public School District buses.

All Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools buses for rural and urban areas.

All Valhalla Community School buses.

All Peace Wapiti Public School Division buses.

All Northern Gateway school buses.

** We will update this list as more bus cancellations come in.

The schools do remain open.
