Mountview chimney fire causes $100K in damage
The Grande Prairie Fire Department says a fire in the Mountview area highlights the value of working smoke alarms.
Crews were called to a report of a chimney fire in the Mountview neighbourhood near 114 Avenue and 97 Street Thursday night. At around 11:30 p.m., firefighters responded with two engines, a ladder, and a command vehicle. After getting to the blaze, another crew was called in.
The damage was contained to the area near the fireplace in the home as crews were able to put it out quickly. Damages are estimated at around $100,000.
There were two people home at the time of the fire. The importance of a working smoke alarm was highlighted in this case with the City of Grande Prairie and Grande Prairie Fire stating in a joint media release, “had the occupants gone to bed, smoke alarms would have been their only line of defence”.
