Grande Prairie Firefighters’ Foundation accepting Sparky’s Secret Wish nominations

Dec 6, 2017 | 11:04 AM

The Grande Prairie Firefighters Charitable Foundation is accepting nominations for its 5th annual Sparky’s Secret Wish.

Firefighter Daniel MacLean says they have between 25 and $30,000 to give out in the form of gift cards this year.

“Last year, I believe, we helped out in the mid-40’s. Hopefully this year, we can spend our money and help out 50 families this year,” said MacLean.

MacLean, also chairperson with the foundation, says the campaign is necessary despite an economic uptick.

“We are starting to see things turn around. There’s always going to be a need, and for the most part, need is continuing,” he said.

“But as far as growing, it’s about getting our name out there and letting people know we are here.”

He discussed the whole point of the program.

“(It’s) to help people going through a difficult time at Christmas. There are a lot of added stresses this time of year,” he said.

“We like to relieve some of the burden associated with getting extra toys for the kids or putting food on the table.

The nomination deadline is Friday.
