Several tickets handed out during check-stops Saturday

Dec 4, 2017 | 2:48 PM

Grande Prairie RCMP want people to plan a safe ride home after several tickets were handed out Saturday.  Holiday check stop season is officially underway.

On December 2, police had multiple check-stops which resulted in two impaired driver investigations, four 72-hour suspensions, four open liquor tickets, six 24-hour suspensions, and one drug-related charge. There were also four warrants executed.

“We were out looking for impaired drivers; impaired by alcohol or drugs and making sure that everybody is getting to their destination, as well as home from their destination safely,” said Corporal Shawn Graham.

Graham says there were also a couple of 24-hour suspensions given out because of drugs in their system.  He says there is a field sobriety test to check for this.  It is conducted by a member that is specifically trained to look for those signs of having consumed some type of drug.

Officers are encouraging people to be diligent this holiday season and plan a safe ride home. They also want people to speak up against impaired driving and call 9-1-1 if you suspect someone is driving drunk.

RCMP say they hope people drive safe, not only during the holidays but year-round as well.
