New Francophone school being planned for north zone of city

Jan 25, 2019 | 10:57 AM

There’s a chance a second Francophone school might be built in the Swan City in the future.

Conseil Scolaire du Nord Ouest Superintendent Brigette Kropelnicki says the school division is now starting the process to get a second Francophone school in the city’s north zone.

She notes it took a few years for the school division to get land for the Francophone school on Pinnacle Boulevard, so they’re starting the process of getting land for the new school as soon as possible.

“The first thing we need is land,” says Kropelnicki. “The elementary level is close to being at capacity, high school a little less, but that is not the reason why we’re asking for a second school. It’s mostly for parents who are not accessing a Francophone school to be able to have a school closer to where they live.”

Kropelnicki says Grande Prairie has a growing Francophone community, and she’s hoping a new school will be built within the next five years.

“It’s very vibrant in Grande Prairie when it comes to the Francophone community. Northwest of Alberta has always been a great place to be, and Grande Prairie is becoming more and more of a Francophone hub,” says Kropelnicki.

Currently, Conseil Scolaire du Nord Ouest is waiting for the city’s response to their request for a school site.
