Family Literacy Day event set for Friday
Family Literacy Day is Sunday, but an event marking the occasion will be held tomorrow at the Prairie Mall.
Kimberly Cairns, the Adult and Family Literacy Program Manager with the Grande Prairie Council for Lifelong Learning, says a bunch of local organizations have put together for kids up to six.
“We will have booths with activities, crafts, games, large mobile play, then we’ll actually have multiple circle times which will include singing and a story time just to promote the ease of literacy and the use of literacy for parents and their caregivers .”
She adds there are easy ways to foster literacy at home.
“Whether it’s in a routine, whether it’s sitting down reading a story, whether it’s doing something tactile is all promotion literacy.”
Cairns says such activities can be built into day-to-day routines.
“Whether you do a hands-on fun activity, you’re working with your little people to improve their literacy skills, (even when) you’re working together baking. As you read a recipe, you’re looking at reading and writing skills.”
That event at the Prairie Mall will go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.
