65th Beekeepers Field Day Friday

Jun 21, 2018 | 3:40 PM

Bee people from around the Peace will be heading to the Beaverlodge Research Farm Friday.

It is hosting the 65th Beekeepers Field Day, starting at 10 a.m.

There will be some hands-on demonstrations for beekeepers. Current trends and research will be discussed. Research Scientist Dr. Jeff Pettis will be the guest speaker. There is also a free barbeque lunch at Noon.

Local researcher Dr. Steve Pernal says the day will also include a sneak peek at the newly-expanded National Bee Diagnostic Centre, even though the building is not quite finished. The anticipated move-in date is sometime in July for GPRC staff, with the Ag. Canada lab expected to move in by the end of August.

Alberta Agriculture staff are looking at surveys of beekeepers to see how bee colonies fared over the winter. Pernal says losses have been what he calls higher than desirable, but those colonies seem to be rebounding.
