Reminder from local RCMP about passing emergency vehicles

Nov 29, 2017 | 9:41 AM

Local RCMP say charges will likely be laid against a Dawson Creek woman after a vehicle hit a police cruiser at the scene of a collision directing traffic.

Crews were pulling a vehicle from a ditch on Highway 43 near Demmitt last Thursday night when a vehicle hit a police cruiser while attempting to go around it despite it having its emergency lights flashing.

Constable Gabrielle Spencer says this serves as a reminder for drivers to watch for flashing lights from emergency vehicles.

“Reduce speed, carefully change lanes if necessary and be prepared to stop, follow directions given by the emergency personnel directing traffic. Be aware that the vehicle in front of you may stop or reduce speed unexpectedly to view the scene.”

The vehicle hit the rear driver side corner of the police vehicle but no one was injured in the incident.

She says the 30-year-old driver is facing charges of careless driving.

It is the law to slow down when passing emergency vehicles and fines double “if you speed past stopped police vehicles, ambulances, fire and tow trucks with their lights flashing.”
