Camp Little Buffalo BBQ set for Wednesday

Jun 19, 2018 | 4:00 PM

Blackman’s Butcher Shop will host its annual Camp Little Buffalo barbecue Wednesday.

RCMP Constable Ellen Archibald is the Camp Director. She says the RCMP and various social agencies start Camp Little Buffalo in 1996.

“The Camp’s goal is to develop self-esteem and assertiveness, communication skills, goal-setting, and problem-solving for youth. We work with youth between the ages of 11 and 13 years old.”

Archibald says Camp Little Buffalo will take place the third week of August at Red Willow Camp near Beaverlodge.  Participants are nominated by their schools. Organizers hope to include 32 kids this year.
She adds presentations from different groups make up part of the camp.

“We have mentors. We do many activities together, so we just give them some tools they can use and put into their toolbox to use when dealing with issues and to teach about leadership, mentorship, and that kind of thing.”

Archibald says the barbecue at Blackmon’s is a very important fund-raiser for Camp Little Buffalo.

“They’re a great partner with us. They have supported this camp for quite a number of years, possibly for the time that the camp has been running. They are a major contributor to our camp.”

The barbecue starts at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blackmon’s Butcher Shop, which is located at 9911 116 Avenue in Grande Prairie.
