Performance for students to highlight sexual consent

Feb 27, 2018 | 2:09 PM

A group of young people in Grande Prairie will learn about sexual consent during a theatre performance in late March.

Mieko Ouchi, Artistic Director for the Edmonton company Concrete Theatre, says the show Consent has been developed over the last four years and there has been a great response from students who experience it.

“The students are incredibly engaged during the show. We were expecting them to be a bit more restless because of the age group. I think they feel that it is very realistic.”

The performance is meant for junior and senior high school students. Charles Spencer High School will experience the performance on March 27 following a show on the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement.

“I think there is something really powerful about theatre that you don’t really get when you go to a movie or watch Netflix. You have these performers right in front of you live and you are sharing the same air as them. You hear and feel their body language. You get a sense of how the whole group is receiving the show,” said Ouchi.

The theatre troupe has been around for 28-years and the actors have other educational plays in their toolbox. One that they are currently on the road with is a play for a younger audience about origami.
