County Councillor hoping for help with road maintenance costs

Nov 25, 2017 | 6:08 AM

A County of Grande Prairie Councillor is hoping the energy industry will help pay the increased cost of maintaining some roads.

This is related to the two new natural gas plants coming to the area south of Wembley.

Bob Marshall says he would like to partner with industry as the construction of the plants will mean a big increase in traffic.

“If you look at even when a rig goes in when they’re completing the wells, you’re looking at hundreds of trucks and that’s large trucks that are going on those roads. During the construction of those facilities, it’s probably going to be over a couple of years, there’s going to be a significant amount of traffic on those roads.”

He adds there will also be more traffic once they are built.

“That’s going to be less once they’re up and operational, but once they have their shut-downs and turnarounds and stuff, that’s going to increase traffic as well at those times. Typically, most facilities, I believe, are every year or every two years, they do these turnarounds and stuff on their facilities.”

County administration is looking into the idea.
