UPDATED: Witness details attempts to save crash victim

Nov 22, 2017 | 4:02 PM

A Grande Prairie woman recounted the effort to try to save a 33-year-old female who died in a car accident Wednesday morning.

Lindsay Trommler was taking her daughter to daycare before going to work Wednesday morning and says she witnessed the accident in her rearview mirror.

“I saw there was a truck going over the centre line … (There was) a car in the ditch and my first instinct was to stop and get whoever was in that car out,” she said in an interview with EverythingGP.

Two men quickly came to her aid and began trying to rescue the crash victim.

“We ran for that car and we were yelling, ‘if anyone can hear us please tap or yell or bang on something,’” she said.

“We were just pulling pieces off trying to get at whoever was in there. We couldn’t see.”

The collision occurred Wednesday morning at approximately 8:14 a.m., and involved a semi-truck and an oncoming SUV on 116 Street between 132 Avenue and 124 Avenue.

Three other vehicles were involved in the collision but their involvement has yet to be determined.

The deceased was the driver and lone occupant of the SUV, and the male driver of the semi-truck and two other vehicle drivers, a male and female, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Next of kin has been notified and identity of the deceased will not be released.

Trommler says they weren’t able to get the door unlocked once they made a hole in the car.

She said emergency crews then showed up and did what they could, and that she had felt compelled to help.

“When you see something like that, it’s your responsibility to stop and help as much as you can,” she said.

“I want to thank those guys. I don’t know who they are. And if the family (reads this), I want them to know we did everything we could.”

Anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to Call Grande Prairie RCMP at 780-830-5701. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by internet at www.tipsubmit.com.
