The 2018 Alberta Summer Games wrapped up Sunday afternoon following three thrilling days of competition.

When all was said and done, it was Zone 3 from Calgary walking away with the Alberta Cup, the award which is presented to the Zone who wins the most medals during the Games.

Zone 3 finished with 159 medals.

For the Peace Region and Zone 8, they finished at the bottom of the standings with 35 medals, including 10 gold.

However, Zone 8 did walk away with the Spirit of Sport Award which was handed out at the Closing Ceremonies Sunday afternoon which is awarded to the Zone who demonstrates the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, team spirit, and cooperation on and off the field.

The Minister’s Cup was awarded to Zone 5, Yellowhead Black Gold, which is handed out to the Zone who shows the greatest improvement in the medal standings from the preview games.

“I am so proud of our amazing young athletes and the competition, sportsmanship, and comradery on display over the last four days in Grande Prairie demonstrated once again that Alberta produces some of the best athletes in Canada,” stated Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism.

“Alberta Sport Connection is proud to support, encourage and develop young athletes through events like the Alberta Games”, said Kelly Blackshaw, Vice Chair of ASC.

“These Games were everything we thought they’d be; a terrific example of community involvement and commitment, and the athletic competition was as impressive as the level of sportsmanship. We are so pleased with the exceptional job the City and County of Grande Prairie has done. These Games help reinforce the role that sport plays in enhancing the quality of life in our province.”

The next Alberta Summer Games will be in Lethbridge in 2020.
