Construction on new South Bear Creek bike skills park underway

Sep 20, 2018 | 12:46 PM

Construction has begun on the new BMX bike skills park located at South Bear Creek.

Parks Planner Lindsey Juniper says it will offer a lot more in the way of a standard BMX bike park compared to the previous park.

“It’s going to be a fully designed bike skills park. So, basically, it’s designed to accommodate user levels from a beginner level to a more advanced level of cyclists.”

Juniper adds the decision to upgrade and repurpose the BMX park was made as the current track is outdated.

“The former site was a BMX race track. It did not meet any BMX race track standards. So, we couldn’t even have had a BMX race club in town. That’s where we decided to repurpose it into something that would be more user-friendly.”

The $260,000 cost of the park is being covered by the City. However, donations are still needed.

“So, we are going to be looking for donations for the [BMX] bike club that’s newly formed,” said Juniper.

The new park will have a couple new additions such as an 800-meter trail, wooden ramps and features for BMX bikes.

Typically, construction takes three to four weeks to complete. The new bike park could be open for public use come early fall, depending on the weather.
