Huge rally today in support of the energy sector

Dec 16, 2018 | 4:30 AM

There could be thousands of people at a rally in support of the energy industry this afternoon in Muskoseepi Park.

More than 200 big trucks will be part of a convoy connected to that rally that will wind its way through the city.

The speakers at the rally will include Grande Prairie Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin.

He says this a is a good chance for people from the Peace to voice their concerns to the provincial and federal governments.

“With regards to lack of pipeline capacity and, really, the detrimental effect it’s having on jobs across the Peace Country. I’ve been a strong and loud advocate for pipeline construction over the last number of years. It’s going to be a great opportunity for me to be able to meet with people that are also concerned about this issue.”

Warkentin says he is proud of the community for starting what he calls “this grassroots initiative.”

He adds his side does not expect construction to start on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion before the next federal election.

“What I am concerned about is the Liberals are just punting this down. They don’t want to upset anybody so they’re telling Albertans that they’re getting it built, they’re telling British Columbians not to worry about it because it’s not going to get built. There are contradictions everywhere. I’m very concerned that there really is no plan to see that built.”

The rally starts at 1 p.m.

The convoy is expected to include 200 trucks or more. It will begin on the west side of the city, go through the Staples intersection, then take the old bypass, make a right onto 102 Street and come by Muskoseepi Park before heading back west.
