On January 2nd, 2025, Gregory Steven Boyd passed from this life to his eternal life to be with his heavenly father. His lifelong best friend and wife, Laura Boyd, was by his side, holding his hand until the end at Simnsa Medical Center in Tijuana, Mexico.
Greg was born on April 12, 1963, in Grande Prairie, to Brian and Jean Boyd. Greg was raised alongside three brothers and two sisters. As a child, Greg was feisty, with strong opinions and a determined spirit—qualities that would serve him well in the future. His early years were spent on the family farm in the Crystal Creek area, where life was full of activity with cattle, chickens, pigs and helping with the family garden. Greg had many cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents nearby who played an important role in his life. In 1976, following the death of his father, Greg and his family moved into the City of Grande Prairie where he eventually settled and rooted his life.
At the age of 17, Greg was involved in a terrible accident that resulted in burns to 80% of his body—an injury that would have shattered the body and spirit of many: but not Greg. He knew the hand of God was upon him and he miraculously defied the odds. Greg’s greatest source of encouragement was his deep faith in God and the love of his life, Laura.
Greg met Laura when he was just 15 years old, and from that very moment, he knew she was the one he was meant to marry. What started as young love quickly blossomed into a deep, unwavering bond that would last for 46 beautiful years. Through every chapter of life—whether it was their adventures in travel, building a home, or raising a family—they were each other’s constant and each other’s rock. Their love was rare and enduring, grounded in respect, trust and devotion. Laura will forever miss her other half. Together, they created a lifetime of cherished memories that will continue to inspire all who knew them.
Greg attended NAIT for plastic engineering but ultimately found his calling in the oilfield, working 30 years for Schlumberger Canada which has become Liberty Oilfield Services. Greg made countless friends throughout his career and was instrumental in training many of them, often using his sense of humor and unique methods. Greg loved his work and spoke fondly of the many memories made with his work family. Greg was a gifted carpenter with a practical sense of approaching tasks. On the side, he built many structures and even constructed a few houses in town. His philosophy in work and life was, “When you do something, you do it right the first time.”
Beyond his career, Greg had a deep love for people and made many lifelong friends. Greg was always smiling, laughing, and telling “Dad” jokes, and there was never a dull moment when Greg was around. He had a unique knack for remembering quotes and jokes, always ready to deliver them for a laugh. When he wasn’t cracking jokes, you could find him watching hockey. Greg had an avid love for hockey, rooting first for the Boston Bruins and secondly for the Edmonton Oilers.
Greg loved life and the beauty in the world, which led him on many road trips throughout his life. His love for the open road became a cherished tradition for his family, as they spent countless hours together on the road with the song “Holiday Road” by Lindsey Buckingham on repeat. Greg truly was a family man, and these trips became the foundation for great memories that will be cherished forever.
One of Gregs many joys came from hiking, biking, taking evening walks, or simply sitting around a campfire with those he held dear. Being out in nature brought him a profound sense of peace, calm, and amazement, reminding him of the beauty and wonder of God’s creations. Greg’s greatest joy, however, came later in life when he was blessed with the title of “Papa Greg.” He found immense joy in watching his grandchildren blossom and discover their own unique qualities.
Greg leaves behind a remarkable legacy. His lifelong partner, Laura, their four amazing children, along with their spouses and beautiful grandchildren: Avery and Matt Sahasrabuddhe, with children Declan, Khai, and Bodhi; Halie and Austin Warwick, with sons Wayne and Luke; Matthew (Matti) Boyd, with daughter Juniper; and daughter Megan Boyd. Greg will be deeply missed by his family, as he was our rock.
Greg is survived by his mother, Jean Rockarts; brothers Gerry Boyd (Deb), John Boyd, and Ken Boyd (Wendy); sisters Lynda Rockarts and Karen Backer (Dennis); mother-in-law Loretta Stubbington; sister-in-law Debby Ray; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins.
Gregory was predeceased by his beloved Wayne Stubbington (father-in-law), Maurice Rockarts (stepfather), Brian Boyd (father), grandmother Elsie Jane Boyd(née Monkman), Rene Rockarts (brother-in-law), and Cierrah Moonen (niece).
