Arthur James “Jim” Brooks, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, ON, passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2021, at the QEII Hospital, at the age of 82 years.
Jim was born on December 14, 1938, in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, the oldest of eight children. At the age of thirteen, the family moved to Bruce Mines, ON, a small town just east of the Soo. Before joining the military, Jim worked at Algoma Steel and sometimes drove a cattle truck from Soo to Toronto. In 1962, he joined the RCAF, training as a radar technician, serving on Canada’s Pine Tree Line of CFB Radar Bases, first at Sioux Lookout, ON, Saskatoon Mountain, AB, and Yorkton, SK. Honourably discharged in 1975, Jim went to work at Alberta Power Limited (now ATCO Electric) in Grande Prairie, and in 1985, Jim transferred to Peace River, AB, where he worked for another six years. In 1991, he returned to Grande Prairie, where he resided until his death.
An excellent handyman, Jim volunteered many hours at the Grande Prairie Museum, being awarded the Miss Isabel Campbell Heritage Award in 2011. In 2012, he and his wife, Sharon were awarded the George Repka Outstanding Achievement Award in appreciation of longstanding and outstanding volunteer service to the community.
Jim will be sadly missed by Sharon, his wife of 57 years; as well as his youngest son Patrick, daughter in-law Betty, and grandsons Cael and Graeme. Also mourning his loss are his brothers: Terry (Kathy), Richard (Brenda), Bill (Janice), and sister, Dorma.
He was predeceased by his oldest son Peter (2015); brothers: Tom, Robert, and Ted; and parents A.J. (1971) and Dorothy (1985).
