Joan Dupuis (nee Ray), longtime resident of Hinton Trail, AB, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, March 18, 2021, in Beaverlodge, AB. She fought cancer with strength and courage and was an inspiration to us all.
Joan was born September 10, 1936, in Grande Prairie, AB, to Jack and Gladys Ray living her early life in Beaverlodge before moving to Hinton Trail. In her teen years, Joan worked at the family country store and went to school in Elmworth, AB. Later, she worked at the Variety store in Beaverlodge and enjoyed playing ball on the Hinton Trail ladie’s softball team.
She married Charles (Chuck) Dupuis on August 11, 1955. They raised 4 children on their Hinton Trail farm, where she resided until her passing. One of her favorite pastimes was supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in any way possible. She watched countless hours of hockey, basketball, football, and judo. In recent years, she and her family spent free time out at the cabin enjoying each other’s company around a campfire.
Joan enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, and many other crafts to pass the winter months. She spent summers tending the gardens and flowerbeds and loved camping with friends and family. Joan was fiercely independent and strong-willed. She was warm, kind, and caring to those around her.
She will be sadly missed by Chuck, her husband of 65 years; children: Dwayne Dupuis, Val (Greg) Saastad, and Joe Dupuis; grandchildren: Tanya (Morgan) Kane, Christy Dupuis, Troy Dupuis, Damien Dupuis, Dion (Brittany) Dupuis, Ryan Saastad (Shannon), Brandon (Randy) Saastad, Chandi Saastad (Joel), Shondelle (Mike) Klym, Danielle Dupuis (Mike), and Christopher Dupuis; and great-grandchildren: Adam Kane, Preston Kane, Courtney Isley, Jordan Isley, Kennedy Isley, Celina Plourde, Tristan Dupuis, Emry Saastad, Hallston Saastad, Ollie Saastad, Addison Klym, Austin Klym, and Brinley Berens; brothers in-law Merle Harding and Ronald Dupuis; sisters in-law Irene Ray and Mary Todd; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents: Jack and Gladys Ray; parents in-law Joseph and Mary Dupuis; daughter Rae Dupuis; brothers Delbert Ray and Lloyd Ray; sisters Lorraine Ducharme and Donna Harding; brothers in-law Maynard Ducharme and Jim Todd; and sisters in-law Faye Dupuis and Edna Tosczak.
The family would like to thank Dr. Clow, the Home Care staff, and the Beaverlodge Municipal Hospital staff for their compassionate care.
At Joan’s request, there will be no funeral. An interment will be held at a later date at Halcourt Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Beaverlodge Hospital Foundation (Box 480, Beaverlodge, AB, T0H 0C0).
