April 10, 1934 – October 27, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Nicolson – much loved husband, father, grandfather and brother. He passed away October 27, 2021 in Grande Prairie AB at the age of 87.
Gordon Nicolson was born April 10, 1934 to William and Marion Nicolson (nee Gordon) in Edinburgh, Scotland. In Edinburgh he attended an all-boys school, joined the Boy Scouts and apprenticed in an accountant’s office. When he was 18 he set sail on a ship to Canada with his Father in search of a more fulfilling life. The rest of his family came later and settled in Alberta during the 1950s. There Gordon met his future wife (and love of his life) Irene, attended NAIT and started a family.
In the 1970s, with 2 children in tow, Gordon and Irene moved to Grande Prairie, AB. There Gordon became a manager at Procter and Gamble and later Weyerhaeuser for many years.
Gordon enjoyed playing rugby, soccer and golf. He was a voracious reader, deep thinker, enjoyed art and was an expert paper airplane maker. He loved people and would often strike up conversations with strangers on his daily Starbucks outing to ask them about themselves. Gordon enjoyed photographing flowers and watching the deer and wildlife in his backyard. He cherished his pet Samoyeds and was a devoted grandfather.
Gordon is predeceased by his parents. Gordon is survived by Irene, his beloved and much devoted wife of 63 years; his children, Catherine and Donald (wife Tracey); his grandchildren Jacqueline, Stuart (wife Kaylee), and Mitchell; and brother Leslie.
Gordon was much loved and will be greatly missed.
The Highland Welcome
When death’s dark stream I ferry o’er,
A time that surely shall come;
In Heaven itself, I’ll ask no more,
Than just a Highland welcome.
-Robert Burns
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choosing.
