A very Special Lady passed away. She was known as Helene, Mrs. G or Nan

She was married to the love of her life for 72 years as of last June. She tried her damnest to stay, so she could look after Poppa but after a brief bout of cancer she finally had to let go.

She was a feisty lady who had a great sense of humour and a real zeal for life. As an old friend said “She was a lot to be dealt with”.

She grew up working hard, losing her Mom at a very early age while giving birth to her 12th child. Who also died at birth. She carried that hard working philosophy throughout her entire life, whether it was making a success out of Al’s News or planting the many flowers through out her yard.

She was an avid cheerleader for all of Jim’s sports teams. She would put newspapers around her chins to catch for Jim while he learnt to pitch. Coming in with numerous bruises. She wasn’t a silent cheerleader giving the umpires a piece of her mind. One time being thrown off the bench and asked to sit on the stands. So she then went and stood behind the umpire making sure he knew she wasn’t happy with his call.

She used saying’s like “You’re a cheeky girl”. She loved kids, always making sure they left with money to get ice cream. She made sure Aislinn and Ben had their most liked foods when they came to the odd supper, homemade perogies and meatballs. At the age of 90 while babysitting, she loved to make cookies with Aislinn and she always made sure to have something for Ben to build.

Then there was her enjoyment of the Green Stuff (Crème de menthe), smuggling it into restaurants in her purse and then asking for a glass of water, dumping the water in the plant behind her and filling the glass with her stash. Jim and Pat shaking their heads wondering if they were going to go to jail because of course they wouldn’t put a 90-year-old in jail.

While she was active with the store she would look forward to Tuesdays, when she would go down to do magazines with Loretta enjoying their special coffee (coffee and baileys) she always went home with a glow in her cheeks and a smile on her face.

She loved Christmas Eve and the gatherings at the back of the store with Old and New Friends. And of course the Green Stuff.

Oh the memories she has shared with every one, she was quite a lady.

When other children were in need of care her home was always open to them.

Mom is survived by her Husband James, Son Jimmy (Pat Stevenson), Daughter Brenda Cornell. Grandchildren Jeremy (Tammy), Mitchell (Kelsey), Gail and Christopher. Great-Grandchildren Ben, Aislinn, and Aiden. Also Pat’s Children Jamie(Jon), Amber (Billy), Stacey(Logan) and their children. She is also survived by one brother Lou, brother and sister-in law Ted and Irene. Sister-in-law Florence.

She was predeceased by her Mom and Dad and 10 Brothers and Sisters, and Son-in-law Bill Cornell

We will miss you Mom your love of life will always be with us.

Her last words left to her family “I will always be your angel”

Interment will follow at a later date at Evergreen Memorial in Edmonton, Alberta
