It is with heavy hearts and sadness, we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Elaine Ardelle Johnson. She passed away on Friday, May 19, 2023, in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 83 years.

Elaine was born on February 10, 1940, in Sexsmith, AB, to Nathalia and George Schwemler. She was the eldest of four girls.

Elaine went to the La Glace School for grades one to eleven, and to Grande Prairie for grade 12. In 1958, she attended the University of Calgary to become a teacher. Elaine taught at schools in Wembley, AB, La Glace, AB, and Beaverlodge, AB. She then worked in the office of their business, Lodge Propane, until they retired in 1996. They spent many years “snowbirding” in Mesa, Arizona. Elaine and Donald loved to go on drives and travelled to Europe and throughout North America. As huge Oiler fans, they attended games across Canada and US. They had fun with their grandchildren at Disney Land and Shuswap Lake. After Donald’s passing, she travelled to many places including: New York, Mesa, Los Angeles, Croatia, and Budapest.

Elaine had a passion for handicrafts and excelled at knitting, crocheting, and embroidering. Her work was amazing. She also enjoyed musicals, ballet, concerts, and festivals.

Elaine is survived by her children: Dean, Brady (Manon), and Kim; grandchildren: Layton, Tyler, Tanner (Rebecca), Teyler, Odelle (Matt), Béatrice (Levi), and Jalane; great-grandchildren: Connor and Naomi; sisters: Sharon Schwemler and Heather Jenkins (Harvey); brother in-law Roger Harcourt; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Elaine was predeceased by her husband Donald Louis Johnson (2013); grandson Joseph Fiola-Johnson (1995); daughter in-law Rhonda Johnson (1994); sister Glenda Harcourt (2006); as well as parents Nathalia (1999) and George Schwemler (1995).

Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 11:00am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.). Luncheon to follow. Interment to take place at Norden Cemetery in La Glace, AB.
