Barry Roger Martin, resident of County of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Clairmont, AB, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2019, at home, at the age of 75 years.
Barry was born April 6, 1944 in Edmonton, AB and raised in Bittern Lake, AB.
As a journeyman heavy duty mechanic, Barry transferred to R. Angus Caterpillar, Grande Prairie in 1968. He formed his own company in 1975, Martrac Service Ltd.
Barry worked hard and played harder! Retirement was easy for Barry once he bought a quad and redirected his energies into quadding and travel. He developed a passion for woodworking and, in the process, created a large amount of sawdust.
His hobbies and interests ranged from waterskiing, boating, the cabin at Charlie Lake, BC, windsurfing, the Visa “driving club”, and camping. Barry believed the road less travelled was the preferable choice. There are not many roads or backroads Barry has missed.
Spring and summer were spent improving the acreage. Many trees and gardens were planted. Fall was all about harvest and driving the combine for the Sears Family. Winters were spent avoiding snow and ice and seeking sandal tan lines. Destinations included New Zealand, Australia and significant time in Yuma, Arizona.
A can-do guy, and one of the best neighbors to have, Barry will be fondly remembered for his creative, practical and entertaining neighbourly ways, and always willing to lend a helping hand.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Dorothy Martin; children: Bradley, Heather (Tim) and Jennifer (Kenji); grandchildren: Morgan, Elizabeth, Edwin, and Emmett; sister Maxine (Neil) Henry; as well as many family, friends, and neighbors.
He was predeceased by his parents Lorna and A.J. Martin.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 3, 2019 at 1:00pm at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005-107 Ave.). A luncheon and visiting will follow at the Golden Age Centre (10222 101 Ave.).
Memorial donations may be made to our family charity: Suzanne Washington Memorial Scholarship fund for first year nursing students at Grant MacEwan University, Edmonton, or to a charity of one’s choice.
