It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lawrence Martineau on Sunday, January 26, 2020, at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie, AB, surrounded by his family, at the age of 92 years.
Lawrence was the first child born to Victoire and Joseph Martineau on the farm in Falher, AB, on November 27, 1927. They later welcomed Lawrence’s siblings, Raoul, Albert, and his (favourite) sister Paulette, to the family.
The family farmed in Falher and Sexsmith and this is where Lawrence found his true calling. Dad loved operating equipment; he could run almost anything. He worked for Ed Norton Construction and the County of Grande Prairie building roads and cutlines. He was hired by the City of Grande Prairie as a grader operator, and spent 23 years there until 1987.
In 1977, the farm life beckoned him back. He loved the land and the lifestyle. He farmed for over 40 years until his health declined and he could no longer work.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of 66 years Joan; children Shelly (Steve) Ungstad, Ken Martineau, and Tom (Colleen) Martineau; grandchildren: Stefanie Ungstad (Dan Johnson), Jonathan (Melissa) Ungstad, Sarah Ungstad, Robert Ungstad, Jeremy Martineau, Chelsey Martineau, and Dylan Martineau; great-grandchildren: Jacob Norrie, Willian Norrie, Eli Johnson, and Evan Johnson; sister Paulette (Wayne) Patterson; sisters in-law Barbara Martineau and Audrey Stewart; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Lawrence was predeceased by his parents Victoire and Joseph; brothers Raoul and Albert; father and mother in-law Jim and Irene O’Connell; sisters in-law: Marjorie Martineau, Mavis Gerry, Eileen Gaunt, and Isabelle O’Connell; brothers in-law: Clayton O’Connell, Glenn O’Connell, Johnny O’Connell, Frank Gaunt, and Walter Gerry.
Dad, we dearly love you and you will be forever in our hearts, and greatly missed.
A Prayer Service will be held on Monday, February 3, 2020, at 5:30pm, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).
