August 6, 1929 – August 20, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our loving husband, father, and grandfather. Philip Edward Haukedal was born in New Norway, Alberta, on August 6th, 1929, and attended school there. Phil grew up on the family farm, working alongside his dad and cousins. He met Jean Molvik in Camrose on a blind date in 1952, and they were married on October 29, 1954. The love and friendship of their 68-year marriage was inspirational to all who knew them, so much so that their nickname at Prairie Lake was “the lovebirds”!
Phil and Jean moved to La Glace in 1957, where he worked on a farm, at a garage, and in many other fields, from gas fitting to carpentry. They purchased the La Glace Café in 1959 and operated it together for several years. Phil dedicated his whole life to his family and worked hard to reach his dream of owning farmland. In 1963, the Haukedals filed for homestead land north of Silverwing Hall and in 1971, purchased a farmstead south of La Glace. They continued to work together raising a family, farming, and each drove a school bus. Phil had a very strong community spirit, was involved in local events, and served on several boards. Phil farmed until 1990, when he and Jean moved into La Glace and built a new home.
Over the years, Phil and Jean enjoyed traveling with family and friends. As snowbirds for years, they shared many good memories and laughs with his sister and brother-in-law. They traveled to Alaska and across Canada, took a Caribbean cruise, and had several vacations to sandy beaches. In 2010, they moved into Grande Prairie and then in 2015, to a seniors’ residence, always grateful to be together.
Known for his integrity and quiet demeanor, Phil touched many lives in his personal and working life. He spent countless hours with his grandkids, whom he enjoyed immensely. Phil had a mischievous side and loved to laugh, tease, and play tricks – and he never said no to a card game.
Phil passed away at the age of 93 on August 20th, 2022, with his family at his bedside.
Phil was pre-deceased by his parents, Ingvald and Emily Haukedal; father and mother-in-law Roy and Gunda Molvik; sister Nora Holmberg; sisters-in-law Nora Olson and Dorphy Bekkerus; brothers-in-law Harvey Bekkerus, Iver Olson, and Gordon Molvik.
Phil leaves to mourn Jean, his loving wife of 68 years; daughters Cheryl Janzen (Jack), Cathy Dolan (Bill), and son Brad Haukedal (Deb); grandchildren Heather Goertzen (Jim); Derek Janzen (Jessie); Patrick Dolan (Shelagh); Elene Dolan (Pat); Michael Dolan (Felicia); Cara Haukedal; Parker Haukedal; eight great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter; brother-in-law Jim Holmberg (Leone), and many nieces and nephews.
