It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Margery Elise Sams on Monday, November 5, 2018, in Beaverlodge, AB, at the age of 82 years.
Mom was born Friday, March 13, 1936 to William “Bill” and Elise Fifield at her Grandma and Grandpa Christensen’s farm east of Olds, AB. There was no doctor available at the time of her birth, so she was delivered by her Grandma Christensen. She grew up on a farm 2 ½ miles west of the Rich Hill School in central Alberta. After finishing grade 11, she went to work at the Associate Clinic in Red Deer, AB as a receptionist and continued on as a telephone operator at AGT. She later moved to Edmonton and worked at Occulist Prescription for 10 years as a receptionist. Mom was also the bookkeeper for Will-Mar Tank Truck Services Ltd, the company her and Dad owned from 1976 until they sold the company in 1996.
While at a dance in 1956, she met the love of her life William “Bill” Tedrow Sams. They married on May 31, 1958 in Edmonton, AB. Due to work they moved to Slave Lake, AB in 1965. In 1967, they welcomed their first child Darwin, followed by the birth of their daughter Roxanne in 1969. The family moved to Rainbow Lake, AB in 1974 and finally settled west of Wembley, AB in 1980.
Mom loved to dance, which was evident by the many nights dad would twirl her around the dance floor. Travelling was another delight she shared with Dad. They vacationed in Hawaii, Alaska, and throughout Canada over the years, putting many miles on their motorhome. She was also an avid gardener and spent hours pulling weeds in her flower gardens and trimming her many shrubs and trees. Mom loved feeding the chickadees and other birds that would find their way to her bird feeder. Once she saved an injured little red pole that she named “Chippy” and nursed him back to health. As the grandchildren started to arrive, her life became filled with hours spent in cold hockey arenas, rainy days at the soccer field and numerous band and Christmas concerts. There is no doubt that she enjoyed time with her grandkids.
Margery is survived by her husband of 60 years Bill Sams; son Darwin (Corrie) Sams; daughter Roxanne (Ray) Hemmingway; granddaughters: Jessyca (Brad) Pettersen, Joleen (Brenden) Holubowich, Jody (Brandon) Sonnenberg, Tarryn Hemmingway (Dorian Massier), and Tasmine Hemmingway (Nolan Bowker); grandson Zackary Hemmingway (Dakota Ferrel); great-grandchildren Gabriella Dubois and Bentley Pettersen; sisters Eileen (Walter) Hanna and June Fifield; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Mom was predeceased by her parents Bill Fifield and Elise (Fifield) Whiteside, step-father Lisle Whiteside, brother Orville Fifield, and sister in-law Benita Fifield.
The family has decided to have a small family gathering at this time and will bury her ashes at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to a charity of your choice.
