Shofner, Marion Isabelle (nee McArthur)

Marion Isabelle Shofner passed away in Grande Prairie on Sunday, December 2, 2018, with three of her daughters at her bedside, at the age of 94 years.
She was the eldest child of Arthur and Margery McArthur. She was born in Spirit River on February 16, 1924, and raised on the family farm near White Mountain, AB with her parents and five siblings: Melba, Donnie, Jessie, Stanley and Jean.
Marion married John Shofner on June 18, 1943 at White Mountain United Church. They lived on the farm near Woking where they had four children: Evelyn, Janet, Gordon and Fay. In 1954, the family moved to Grande Prairie to operate Grandview Motel. In 1959, their fifth child, Phyllis was born. The family operated the motel until 1986.
Marion worked at the Herald Tribune from mid-sixties until 1979. She then worked in bush camps as a cook’s helper with her sister Jessie for a few winter seasons. She spent summers golfing and camping around the Peace Country. John and Marion took several trips including: The Panama Canal, Hawaii, Australia, Las Vegas and many other places. Her volunteering passion carried on from her upbringing and was recognized when she received her 50-year pin with the Royal Purple Ladies Club.
John and Marion proudly took on the added responsibility of being Godparents to the Hatch family.
Marion is survived by her children: Evelyn Bracko, Janet Shofner (Rene), Gordon (Carran) Shofner, Fay (Robert) Scriba, and Phyllis (Duane) Backer; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Marion enjoyed a long, healthy life surrounded by her large family. She will now rejoin those who predeceased her including her parents Arthur and Margery; husband John; son in-law Ken Bracko; brothers Donnie and Stanley; sister Jessie; brothers in-law Arnold Peacock, Melvin Jackson, Clayton Shofner and Sid Giroux; as well as sisters in-law Laura Giroux and Martha Shofner.
Marion enjoyed the final years of life at Wild Rose Manor and Mackenzie Place. The family would like to thank the caring angels that looked after Marion. Their hard work, dedication and love is incomparable.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2018, at 11:00am, at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 St.).
