Linda Lucy Sodergren, resident of Sexsmith, formerly of Clairmont, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at her family farm near Sexsmith, AB, at the age of 69 years.
Linda, daughter of Clarence and Iris Rockarts, was born on June 30, 1949 and was raised on the family farm northeast of Clairmont. She went to school in Sexsmith and graduated from Sexsmith Secondary School in 1967. It was during English class that she met her husband of 47 years, Edward Sodergren. Together they attended Grande Prairie Junior College in 1968 and then the University of Alberta where she obtained her Bachelor of Education in 1972. Linda put her degree to good use by teaching kindergarten at Hillside School in Grande Prairie.
Linda spent time trail riding in the Rocky Mountains in the 70’s with her husband, brother Danny and friend John Weber. She put her adventurous spirit on hold to start her family in 1977 and had three children. She then pursued building and starting a business, Spruce Meadows Golf and Country Club, which became an everlasting part of her life. In retirement Linda continued to be present by golfing and taking care of the flowers on the course.
If you were to ask friends for words that best describe Linda, they would say: loving, caring, brave, determined, selfless and courageous. Family and friends loved the quilts that Linda spent so much love and care on. Linda cherished spending time with her children and grandchildren and was always present for birthdays, special events, hockey games and berry picking.
She is survived by her husband Edward Sodergren; her children: Rocky (Courtney) Sodergren, Trevor (Jessica) Sodergren, and Heather (Trevor) Buchanan; grandchildren: Katelyn, Gabrielle, Claire, Brady and Daniel Sodergren; brother Rodney (Francis) Rockarts; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents Clarence and Iris Rockarts, and brother Danny Rockarts.
Linda will always be remembered for her efforts in her fight against Parkinson’s disease. A disease she battled for 30 years. Never once did she complain or let the disease get the better of her. She inspired and gave hope to others with her courage, selflessness and determination to overcome the disease.
A Celebration of Linda’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 with a 10:00am Viewing followed by an 11:00am service at Clairmont United Church (9915 100 Ave.). Interment will follow at Emerson Trail Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at Clairmont United Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson Association of Alberta (103, 10901 100 St., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 2M9).
