Mae Trelle, resident of Lake Saskatoon near Wembley, AB, formerly of Vancouver, BC, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2019, at Prairie Lake Seniors Community, at the age of 94 years.
Sarah Mae was born on May 7, 1925 in Vancouver, BC to Adam and Catherine Morton who had emigrated from Scotland. She trained as a registered nurse, then took a two-year midwifery program in Scotland. She returned to Vancouver to continue her nursing career.
During WWII, Mae worked as an electrician, putting the wiring harness down the inside (to the tip) of the bomber wing. Something only a small person could do!
Mae met her future husband, Kay Trelle, in 1942 when he boarded in her parent’s home while taking RCAF training. Twenty-three years later, in 1965, Kay tracked her down. Mae had never married. They married a year later in 1966. A true romantic story. They moved to the Lake Saskatoon community in 1989 when Kay retired.
Mae was a passionate volunteer. She gave her time and gifts to the Canada Winter Games, Alberta Summer and Winter Games, Reading Network, Lake Saskatoon Community Club, Saskatoon Lake Agriculture Society, Saskatoon Lake Weavers, Grande Prairie Regional College, and many more community events.
Mae was a very creative weaver who loved to make, and then give away beautiful afghans. She also made many pairs of warm alpaca wool socks as special gifts. Her pies were famous and were often the way she returned a favour or given as a special treat.
Mae will be sadly missed by her nephew Gary (Janet) Morton and their children: Ryan and Kara; nephew Rob Morton; brother in-law Ron (Mavis) Trelle and their children: Connie (John) Lowry, Margie (Alan) Jensen, John (Patricia) Trelle, and Joan (Mark) Jensen; her sister in-law’s children: Lark (JC Jr.) Montgomery, and Dr. Barr (Sally) Baynton; special family friends Barbara (Jim) Graham, Chris (Kathy) Anderson, Jacques and Lorraine Trepanier, Marilyn (Randy) Grubb and “adopted children” Nancy Hope and Art Rigby; as well as many friends in the Lake Saskatoon and Wembley communities and beyond.
She was predeceased by her husband Roy “Kay” Trelle, brother Ed Morton, sister Evaline Small, sister in-law Marie Trelle Baynton, Marie’s husband Dr. Don Baynton.
A Celebration of Mae’s life will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2019, at 1:30pm at Saskatoon Lake Community Hall (Sec Hwy 724 and Twp Rd 722). Interment will follow at 3:30pm at Lake Saskatoon cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to A Living Tribute (330 5th Ave. SW, Suite 1800, Calgary, AB, T2P 0J4, www.alivingtribute.ca), or to a charity of one’s choice.
