Patricia “Pat” Wideman, long-time resident of Beaverlodge, AB, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2021, at the age of 89 years.
Pat was born on March 24, 1931, in Mannville, AB, to Tilly and Edna Brewer. She had one brother Morley, and three sisters Margarette, Jean and Alberta. They moved around a lot but resided mostly in the Edmonton, AB, area and Whitecourt, AB, until finally settling in Kingman, AB, when she was 13, where her dad bought a lumber yard and taught her bookkeeping. She attended school there and helped with the lumber yard until marrying Samuel Brubaker Wideman on September 29, 1948, at the age of 17.
Sam drove a truck and worked on the oil rigs. They travelled around Alberta and Saskatchewan, moving from rig to rig for many years. They had three sons, Samuel Morley, Bruce Laverne, and Lonnie Blaine, and one daughter Holly Patricia.
Pat and Sam settled in Beaverlodge, AB, in 1962, and bought the Shell service station aka Triple S “Sam’s Shell Service”, where Pat worked alongside Sam pumping gas, answering phones and doing the books.
They were active members of the community, and pat worked with the tourism association and sat on town council from 1977 to 1980. She had strong Christian beliefs, and attended church regularly and taught Sunday school. She was a cub leader and a hockey mom when the boys were young. She loved to curl, skate, play softball, bowl, knit and crochet, camp, go to the cabin on the Wapiti River, and play endless hours of cribbage, which every one of her children was taught at an early age. She was a dog lover and always had one by her side for most of her life. She and Sam loved to travel and had been all over Canada, the US, and Mexico.
They sold the garage in 1984, and Pat went to work at CIBC for a little while, and then became the bookkeeper for Big Valley Construction in Hythe, AB, until she retired in 1998.
She lost the love of her life, Sam Wideman, in July 2000, and things were never the same for her.
We, the family of a wonderful woman named Pat, mom, grandma, and great-grandma, are so very thankful to have had her in our lives and find peace in knowing she had a long, fulfilling life. She was loved dearly by many and is now amongst Dad, Bruce, and all the loved ones who passed before her. Until we meet again, we love you.
She is survived by her sons Sam Jr. (Grace) and Lonnie (Noel); daughter Holly Somers; daughter in-law Aggie; grandchildren: Morley (Debra), Jason (Margie), Jessica Mah, Brady, Melissa (Jeffery) Bourke, Riley, and Samara Somers; great-grandchildren: Samantha, Catherine, Mitchell, Jonathan and Maria Wideman; Keesha, Kaylie and Kiara Mah; Madison, Payten and Tylen Bourke; sister Alberta Urquhart; sister in-law Ella Burnstad; as well as numerous nephews, nieces and special friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Samuel; son Bruce; parents Tilly and Edna Brewer; brother Morley; sisters Marg Knutson and Jean McKenzie; brother in-law Ralph Urquhart; as well as many, many Wideman’s, too numerous to mention.
A private Viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, from 7:00-9:00pm at Oliver’s Funeral Home.
A Memorial Service for immediate family only will be held at Oliver’s Funeral Home on Friday, January 29, 2021, at 2:00pm, with interment at the Beaverlodge Cemetery to follow.
