It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their beloved mother and grandmother, Lai Har Wong, on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the age of 87 years.
Lai Har was born October 8, 1936, in China. She went to work in Hong Kong where a relative introduced her future husband Jack, by exchanging photos. She would tell friends she was a stamp bride. In May of 1958, Lai Har flew to Vancouver, BC, where she finally met and married Jack, and moved to Grande Prairie, AB, which became home.
Lai Har worked as a dishwasher/prep person for Jack at the old bus depot café, and then for her nephew Tom at Midtown Restaurant.
Lai Har liked doing Tai Chi at the park, had a green thumb with house plants, flower beds and vegetable gardens, loved babies, knitting, and was a feisty mahjong player. She loved her Chinese soap operas and Chinese tv channels.
She will be forever and sadly missed by her children: Bob (Anita), Betty, Bill (Wendy), Peter (Li Qing), and Irene; grandchildren: Krystal, Casey, Sandra, Hayley, Ty, and Max; her older sister Lai Zhen; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and extended family members.
Lai Har was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Jack Wong in 2013.
The family would like to thank the nurses in Unit 21, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, for their loving care for the short time she was in the hospital.
A Viewing and Visitation will be held Friday, December 8, 2023, at 6:00pm at Oliver’s Funeral Home (10005 107 Ave.).
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 1:30pm at Oliver’s Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Grande Prairie Cemetery (84 Ave and 112 St.), with refreshments and snacks to be served at Golden Star Restaurant (10112 101 Ave.), and a Memorial Dinner to follow at approximately 4:30pm.
