Pro Tips – Horse Trailers

Apr 30, 2025 | 1:16 PM

Today on Greenhawk’s Pro Tips, we’re talking about road safety.

Spring weather means we’ll start seeing more horse trailers on the highways, and need to be aware they contain living, moving animals. Our best friends are in those trailers, and it’s up to every driver to protect them.

Whenever you take your horses out on the road, whether for a short or a long trip, you are putting yourself and your horses at a certain amount of risk.

There’s nothing simple about towing 5 thousand pounds of trailer and horse behind a truck. If trailering is new to you, practice driving the rig before you put a horse in the trailer.

Know how to park and back up before hitting the road.  After soaking up the basics of trailer hauling, hook up that trailer and get to work.

Greenhawk recommends professional driving courses, and an open field is a great place to practice turning and backing up.

Considerate driving can have a real effect on your horse’s attitude about the trailer, and help them better tolerate trips.
