McGOVERNS FIRE

No injuries in early morning fire at McGovern’s RV and Marine

May 31, 2020 | 11:20 AM

Fire has ripped through a large part of McGovern’s RV and Marine in Clairmont Sunday morning.

The fire, which began shortly before 8:30 a.m., has effected the service bays and parts department, according to a post from McGovern’s Facebook page.

“Luckily, there was no one present during the time of the fire and all of our staff and customers are safe,” reads the post.

McGovern’s says because of the damage caused by the fire, the parts and service department will not be operating for the next while. The company’s phone system was also damaged from the blaze, and anyone who wishes to contact them may do so by texting them at 780-539-1814.

“If you had any deals in the works, your personal unit on site for service, or have any questions please contact us so that we can provide you answers.”

They add they are still able to process sales at this time.

“We are grateful for the thoughts and well wishes we have already received from the community,” reads the post. “We have been at home here for the past 25 years and look forward to many more.

County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Services says they remain on scene with approximately 30 crew members from the Clairmont, Sexsmith, Dunes and Wembley stations, and are continuing to work to keep the fire out of the showroom area while containing it to the service bay area.

Upon initially arriving at the scene, fire crews say they found flames coming from the roof of the service bay area, where several RVs were found to be on fire.

“Aerial apparatus were used initially to knock down the body of the fire from a safe distance due to a large volume of propane cylinders exploding.”

Regional Fire Services says crews will remain on scene for several more hours and they are asking the public to avoid the service road in front of McGovern’s as trucks and water supply need clear access to the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time and the County Fire Marshall is investigating.
