Weather impacting mail delivery in Grande Prairie

Feb 5, 2018 | 12:50 PM

If you are expecting something in the mail today, it might not show up until tomorrow.

Residents of Grande Prairie can expect slower than usual service from Canada Post, according to Phil Legault, a spokesperson for Canada Post. He says the weather impacts how fast a mail carrier can get to the mailboxes. For Grande Prairie, it is the amount of snow received over the weekend and the cold temperatures that are impacting the carrier’s service.

Legault explains that the city is under a “yellow alert”.

“To alert our residents, customers, and Canadians, that there are issues with mail delivery, we have two levels of alerts. The ‘yellow alert’ which basically means that delivery agents and carriers will be going out and doing their best effort to deliver the mail. But, there might be delays.”

He explains that a “red alert” is sent out when there is a complete halt in service such as when the Fort McMurray wildfire took place.

With reports of ruts on the roads, snow piled high on properties around the city, and temperatures sitting close to 30 below, carriers are doing their best to get to every home and community mailbox.

“You know what really helps us is, obviously, throughout the winter months if residents can help clear the path their mailbox. It is extremely helpful to us. It not only helps us, but it helps themselves, other delivery people, neighbours, and other people in the neighbourhood.”
