1600 people expected at Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention

Mar 8, 2018 | 4:33 AM

Around 1600 educators from around the region are expected to attend this year’s Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention.

It runs Thursday and Friday.

President Julie Gummesen says this is a good time for teachers to get a break from the classroom.

“Definitely, kind of a rejuvenating sort of time. We come in after Christmas, there’s a bit of a lag there between January and spring break. I think it’s a great time. The weather doesn’t always co-operate, but I think by then, teachers are ready to get together and go back to school themselves, I guess.”

Gummesen says speakers will include award-winning journalist, actor, and comedian Bill Carr.

“He’ll be there Thursday, making us laugh about our jobs (and) ourselves. He’ll be there on Thursday all day with us. We have several sessions to address the Truth and Reconciliation (Commission’s) recommendations.”

The Comp, Peace Wapiti Academy, Harry Balfour, and St. Joe’s will all act as host schools.
