Mar 18, 2018 | 7:00 AM

Team Alberta North is set to get going at this year’s Arctic Winter Games.

Alberta has sent a 239-person delegation of athletes, coaches, mission staff, chaperones, and cultural delegates.

Grande Prairie’s Karna Germsheid is part of the mission staff.

“Everybody’s excited to have a role and to compete. An international event like this is a really unique opportunity for northern Albertans.”

She adds this is the Olympics for some of these competitors.

“For some kids, this is it. This is the top that they’ll ever get. Of course, there’ll be a handful of kids that always carry on and move forward in their sports career.”

The South Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, which takes in Fort Smith and Hay River, is this year’s host.

The opening ceremony is set for this evening.

The Arctic Winter Games run all week.
