City Scrub kicks off Sunday

Apr 22, 2018 | 6:00 AM

As the snow melts and the grass starts to show through, so does all of the garbage that has accumulated over the winter.

The city’s Environmental Outreach Specialist Jessica Foley says there is a large littering problem in Grande Prairie.

“It builds up over the winter months and then once the snow melts we get that wind that comes through and it just sort of blows it right through the city,” she said.

She says volunteers are needed once again to help clean up the mess during the annual City Scrub April 22 – 30.

“We’ve done this over multiple years now and it’s always a huge success getting people out and cleaning up and taking pride in their community.”

Last year 8,000 people of all ages took 20 minutes to an hour to help clean up the city.

“A lot of businesses go out there…some of the oil companies that are having their spring break up… community groups, neighbourhood associations, non-profits.  Everybody seems to get out there to want to help restore that shine that Grande Prairie has.”

Registration information is available through the city’s website here
