New City Council to be sworn in

Oct 23, 2017 | 11:44 AM

A week after Municipal Elections in Alberta, the Grande Prairie City Council members will be sworn in tonight.

Four new faces will be joining the council table including Dylan Bressey. He says it was a long road of campaigning, but he is excited to get to work.

“I am really looking forward to the team we have. There were people I knew before and I had asked them for advice, like if I should campaign and if they thought this job was a good fit for me. I got to know all of them in the last month or so. I have learnt a lot from all of these people that got elected. I can’t wait to work with all of them,” explained Bressey.

Eunice Friesen, Clyde Blackburn, Wade Pilat will also be sworn in as new Councillors. Yadvinder Minhas has taken two terms off, but will join council chambers once again.

Chris Thiessen had the second most amount of support with 9.6 percent of the votes. He says he is happy with who will be by his side for the next four years.

“There are so many different perspectives being brought to the table from so many different sectors of our society. You know the biggest thing I enjoyed about this election was that everyone who got elected went that extra mile. They worked hard to get to where they are here on council today.”

Along with Thiessen, Jackie Clayton, and Kevin O’Toole will serve a second term. Clayton was in one of the top three spots for support coming out of this election.

“It is nice to feel recognized and appreciated for the work I did last time,” explained Clayton.

Bill Given will be returning to his position as Mayor for a third term.

The Mayor and Councillors will be sworn in at an organizational meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.
