Vandals hit Flags of Remembrance again

Oct 25, 2017 | 11:45 AM

Vandals just can’t seem to stay away from the Flags of Remembrance in Sylvan Lake.

Al Cameron, Executive Director with Veterans Voices of Canada, says seven honour plaques have been removed from their respective flags.

In a video posted to Facebook on Sunday, Cameron expresses frustration at the fact someone would do such a dishonour to fallen veterans and heroes.

“All I can say is please, please don’t do that. We’ve got people, family members and businesses who honour their heroes by sponsoring these honour plaques and the reason for them to be here is for everybody to walk the flag line, to read these names of people we wouldn’t necessarily hear of or read about at any other time,” he says.

Last year, vandals left both a plaque and flag lying in the ditch.

Cameron added in his post that he is considering installing motion-sensor cameras because there are, “too many people working too hard to make these tributes happen.”

One commenter even offered $200 to pay for cameras, an offer Cameron says he’s already taken up. However, that won’t cover all the costs of cameras and Cameron adds it’s really a cost he’d prefer to avoid.

Cameron also noted Sylvan Lake isn’t the only Flags of Remembrance site to see vandalism this year. In Windsor, eight plaques were taken off flags this month, he says.

He also plans on reporting the incident to RCMP.

The Flags of Remembrance will come down for the season on November 12 or 13, depending on how many volunteers are available. A closing ceremony will be held November 18 at the Sylvan Lake Community Centre at 1 p.m. It is open to the public.
