Catholic schools superintendent speaks out on alternative sex-ed curriculum

The Superintendent of the Grande Prairie Catholic and District School Board says he was misquoted regarding the alternative sex-education curriculum for Catholic schools.

Karl Germann, also President of the Council of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta, says this is “a political argument.”

“People are blending Catholic education sex curriculum into this when in fact it’s not part of that politic argument,” he said.

“We teach anything that the province requires us to teach. Period.”

He adds Catholic teachings include consent and the sex-ed program is inclusive to all, regardless of sexual orientation.

Germann adds he has not spoken to the premier or NDP government recently on the subject, but has meetings in Edmonton over the next couple of days

“It’s all getting confused in the myriad of the UCP race and politics and so on. This has nothing to do with that,” he said.

“We are developing and working with the province. They said what we’re doing has been good for the past year.”

But he says things have gone in the wrong direction.

“People are making some wrong statements … People are getting hurt and feeling bad, and that’s not right.”

 He hopes soon they can sort politics out of the issue.

“We are being caught in a political conversation occurring in this province … Everybody needs to stop and breathe, and work together tor resolve what’s occurring,” he said.

“All that’s happening now is it’s becoming very dramatic and it’s not healthy for anybody.”
