Legion sets $1.5 million target for renovations

The Grande Prairie Legion is attempting to raise $1.5 million for renovations.

The number marks a three-year goal, with the hopes they can raise $400,000 by the summer of 2018.

Their wine & cheese event Monday was the beginning of their Donor Wall Campaign, and long-time member Doug Stark said there was a lot of work to be done on the building.

“We have a little more work to do to get bathrooms done, and we’re trying to do counters in the kitchen,” he said. “The rest of it’s all done. We’ve done it.”

The fundraiser will end with the names of donors shown on the installed walls. There will be one for corporate sponsors and another for individual donors.

Legion chairman Dan Christenson says the campaign will help fix accessibility issues in the building.

“We are building a wall to generate funds to update the legion. Our number one priority is to make all our bathrooms disabled and handicapped available,” he said.

The campaign itself took five years to get off the ground, and was inspired by another successful fundraiser.

“I was in a legion in Southern Alberta and they had something similar to this. I believe they raised close to $150,000 to add a wing onto their legion to expand,” he said.

“It’s taken us five years to move forward to this point and get where we are today.”

Along with the Donor Wall Campaign, the Legion’s Poppy Campaign will begin Friday with the delivery of one to Mayor Bill Given.
