Hundreds attending conference at Evergreen Park

A big farm conference is underway at Evergreen Park.

The Agricultural Service Boards Conference has drawn 475 people from all over Alberta.

Clear Hills County Ag. Fieldman Greg Coon is pleased with the turnout.

“That’s a good turnout, yes, especially for Grande Prairie because a lot of people have got to travel from a long ways away. We’ve had a pretty successful event to this point.”

He adds those attending will be discussing some resolutions that will later be used to lobby the provincial government.

“We’ve got some resolutions regarding the carbon tax. We’ve got some resolutions regarding crop insurance, some resolutions regarding wildlife predation on livestock. Those type of issues are what the Ag. Service Boards lobby the government (on) in order to get legislation in place to deal with those issues.”

Coon says these Boards have been in place since 1945 and Alberta is the only province that has them.

“(They were) initially put in place to enforce the Weed Act, which was also in the 1940’s when that was established. Anything we can do to promote agriculture, that’s all part of it.”

The conference will run until through Friday morning.
