Sutton murder, tire theft among cases in Grande Prairie court Monday

A theft case involving stolen tires and an employee of a local auto dealership has led to a six-month jail sentence.

Jason Ronald Schierman pleaded guilty to a charge of theft over $5000 Monday in Grande Prairie court.

The Crown told court the auto dealership was billed for $161,918.53 worth of purchase orders for tires. Schierman then sold the tires and kept the money himself.

The defence says that Schierman was having financial and personal troubles before the theft occurred and that the tires were sold for pennies on the dollar.

In addition to the six-month jail sentence, Schierman has been given 18-months probation and ordered to pay restitution to the dealership, its parent company or its insurer.

 

Guilty pleas from a man charged in 11 cases.

Grande Prairie court has heard guilty pleas from a man facing 34 total charges in 11 separate cases.

Court was told the cases included ones where Dana Edward Moses was in possession of a car that he was not supposed to have, a car that also had stolen property inside. Another involved a house break-in where he was found intoxicated and passed out on the bathroom floor.

Moses pleaded guilty to 13 counts, possession of stolen property, break and enter, possession of a weapon and obstruction among them. There were also pleas to several failure to comply, breach conditions and failure to appear in court charges. All other counts were withdrawn.

Moses has been given a 12-month jail sentence, minus credit for one-month time served, to cover everything.

All these cases happened over the last two-and-a-half years.

 

Two suspects in Hannah Sutton murder case in court Monday

Two of the four men charged in the December shooting death of Hannah Sutton made brief court appearances via closed-circuit television in Grande Prairie court Monday.

Justice Watt-Blais, who has been charged with murder, is due back in court February 7. The defence says it needs time to review disclosure.

Watt-Blais is now being held at the Edmonton Remand Centre after first being held at the Peace River Correctional Centre.

David Comber, charged with accessory after the fact, is also are due to appear again February 7. He is being held in Peace River.

Three other people also facing a charge of accessory after the fact are due back in court January 31.
