Local municipalities want in on transit project

Mar 26, 2018 | 3:21 PM

County of Grande Prairie Council has voted in favour of applying to join a transit program pilot project.

This would see city buses run between Grande Prairie and Clairmont, Sexsmith, Wembley, Beaverlodge, and Hythe.

Acting Community Services Director for the County Kathleen Turner says residents have been looking for something like this.

“They did a needs assessment (in) 2013, I believe. It indicated that people were looking for that public transportation. This opportunity came along, and it was a great opportunity to implement something.”

The province is offering grants of up $350,000 over two years.

Turner says the next step is to get a grant application ready.

“We’ll be finishing up the application, which will have to be into Alberta Transportation by the end of the month. Then, if that’s approved, we’ll move on to Phase 2, which is working out the service agreements, which defines what the level of service is for each community.”

Hythe will be included, even though the rules of the program say it is too far from Grande Prairie. Turner says the province recognizes that the centralized service hub for Hythe is Grande Prairie.

She adds they hope to hear back on their application by the end of June.
