TORONTO VAN SUSPECT TO APPEAR IN COURT

The man suspected of running down numerous pedestrians with a van on a stretch of Yonge Street north of downtown Toronto is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning. Police say charges against Alek Minassian, 25, of Richmond Hill, Ont., will be revealed at that time. Minassian was arrested not far from the carnage where a van killed 10 people and injured 15 others. Police have not yet released the names and ages of the victims, or a possible motive.

TRUDEAU: ‘WE SHOULD ALL FEEL SAFE’

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will make a statement early Tuesday in relation to the van attack in Toronto on Monday which killed 10 people and injured 15 others. In a statement made Monday night, Trudeau said the federal government is “monitoring this situation closely” and that we should all “feel safe walking in our cities and communities.”

VEHICLES ARE CHEAP, EASY WEAPONS, SAY EXPERTS

Vehicles have been used to ram people more than a dozen times around the world in recent years, often with deadly results similar to those in Toronto. But preventing people from using vehicles as deadly weapons is a difficult task for law enforcement officials, experts say. Candyce Kelshall, an adjunct professor with the terrorism, risk and security studies program at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., says regardless of motives, it’s tough to stop someone from using a vehicle to kill.

PERU ORDERS ARRESTS IN CANADIAN MAN’S KILLING

Peru’s attorney general has ordered the arrest of two suspects in the killing of a Canadian man who travelled to the Amazon rain forest to study hallucinogenic medicine, officials said Monday. Authorities said over the weekend that a mob dragged Sebastian Woodroffe by the neck to his death shortly after people accused him of killing Olivia Arevalo, an octogenarian plant healer from the Shipibo-Konibo tribe of northeastern Peru.

FOREIGN MEDDLING: ‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,’ SAYS G7

Canada and its G7 partners are saying “enough is enough” to attacks by Russia and other authoritarian countries in their democratic institutions, says Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland. Following talks with her G7 counterparts, Freeland affirmed an organized effort to respond to foreign meddling and the spreading of false information — mainly by Russia. Exactly what that means is a work in progress.

TWO HUMBOLDT BRONCOS NO LONGER CRITICAL

Two Humboldt Broncos players are no longer in critical condition in a Saskatoon hospital following the April 6 crash that killed 16 people. The Saskatchewan Health Authority says six patients continue to receive treatment, but would not provide further details on their conditions, except to say none are critical. Several others have been released or transferred to hospitals near their hometowns.
