City has begun filling in potholes

Apr 26, 2018 | 11:53 AM

With the recent influx of temperatures from cold to warm and melting of snow, city streets have taken a pounding.

Transportation Services Manager Robert Carroll said City crews are making regular rounds to identify the trouble spots.

“We do regular patrols with our supervisory staff and also we have a pothole patching crew that will patrol also. When they see a pothole if they are not geared up to patch it immediately they will get geared up to patch it.”

Carroll adds a major reason for potholes at this time of the year is related to the cooling and heating of water.

“If there is moisture on the road in the daytime and then at the night time that freezes, then in the next morning it thaws again. It’s the expansion and contraction of the water. The water changes from water to ice and back to water again. That will get into the voids and surface of the asphalt and cause potholes to appear.”

City crews are forced to use a cold-mix asphalt for potholes and won’t have a better fix until summer.

“The repairs we are doing this time of year are temporary because we don’t have access to hot-mix asphalt at this time of year. None of the suppliers that will provide us with this mix are open this time of the year,” said Carroll.

People can report a pothole or road issue to the City.
