Safety tape being cut, barricades being moved, on closed roads says the MD of Greenview
The MD of Greenview says people have been moving barricades and cutting safety tape around closed roads.
Communications Officer Diane Carter says field staff have noticed this in recent days.
“Because there’s such a large volume of locations, we’re up to 92 areas now that have been noted with potential damage, the areas that are closed are a small portion of that. However, some people are removing the barricades and cutting down the safety tape that’s in place, so it’s really dangerous and we are strongly urging people not to do that.”
She adds in some cases, this may happen because barricades are placed far away from where the trouble spot is located.
“They may not be able to see the location that is dangerous. Please be assured that we are only closing those roads where it is completely essential to do so.”
Carter says not only is this dangerous, but it can lead to more damage to the road.
“Part of the issue is that we have this flooding incident with the spring melt and runoff that has been on-going for so many days, and the melting is going to continue, so erosion will progress over the course of that time. If the water (runoff) is continuing, the area will be worsening, and then people driving on top of it will make it a much bigger issue for us to fix later.”
A list of road closures in the MD of Greenview can be found on its Facebook page. All the municipalities in the Peace have updated closure lists on their respective Facebook pages as well.
