Alberta delegation visiting Ottawa to ask for caribou protection money
EDMONTON — Alberta Environment Minister Shannon Phillips is leading a delegation to Ottawa to ask for money and time to implement the province’s caribou recovery plan.
Federal legislation requires the provinces to submit plans for how they will support recovery of the threatened species.
In March, Phillips suspended parts of Alberta’s recovery plan, saying the province needed more time to assess the economic impact of restoring habitat to the levels Ottawa requires.
She also said the province needs $50 million for the study as well as ongoing support for the costs of restoring the forests which have been heavily affected by forestry and energy development.
