911 callers reported seeing military plane fall from sky
SAVANNAH, Ga. — In frantic calls to 911, witnesses reported a fiery tragedy that dropped suddenly from above: a military cargo plane, one of its engines apparently not working, crashing nose-first onto a Georgia highway and raining flaming debris onto the blacktop.
“I’ve got flames and smoke everywhere and stuff coming out of the sky,” one man told a 911 operator after the C-130 Hercules aircraft plummeted to the ground shortly after takeoff from Savannah’s airport Wednesday.
Savannah police on Monday released 911 recordings from the crash, which killed nine airmen from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard. No one on board survived, but somehow the aircraft missed hitting any cars, businesses or people on the ground.
There were plenty of witnesses nearby. The first 911 call came in at 11:27 a.m., and dozens more soon followed.
